Living Eyes is the Bee Gees' sixteenth original album, released in 1981. The Bee Gees began to break away from the disco sound that was prominent on their work in the mid-late 1970s with this album. However the album was not a commercial success, perhaps due to them being so strongly associated with disco. It sold 750,000 copies worldwide (compared to 16 million copies of their previous studio album "Spirits Having Flown" in 1979), and while it did not sell well in either the UK (#73) or the US (#41), it reached #6 in Norway and #4 in Spain.

It would be the band's final album on RSO Records. The label would be absorbed into Polydor and susbsequently discontinued.

The album also features minimal falsetto vocals (which had become a Bee Gees trademark by that time), with one notable exception being the song "Soldiers". Living Eyes was chosen to be the first ever album to be manufactured on CD for demonstration purposes, as seen on the BBC TV program Tomorrow's World in 1981, and was featured on the inaugural issue of the Compact Disc trade magazine.[1] It was the first Bee Gees album to be released on CD, in early 1983 when compact discs were first commercially available, though few were manufactured. After RSO Records was absorbed by Polygram Records, Living Eyes, ever so ironically, was the only Bee Gees album in their catalog not to be released on CD in the late 1980s, and ultimately became quite rare. To date, there is no word on whether Rhino Records or Reprise Records (who have reissued much of the Bee Gees back catalogue in recent years) will re-release it on CD.

Silk Electric is a 1982 album released by American R&B singer Diana Ross on the RCA label. The album is most notable for its iconic Andy Warhol-designed album cover of Ross and for the Top 10, Grammy-nominated single, "Muscles". It was the second album self-produced by the singer except for the aforementioned hit, which was produced and written by former Motown labelmate and longtime friend Michael Jackson. The album was certified Gold for sales surpassing 500.000 units in the United States alone.

The Andy Warhol cover design was replicated on the actual LP press, which instead of being called "Side 1" and "Side 2" were called "Face A" and "Face B". The song "Turn Me Over" was actually a cue to the listener to turn the record album or cassette over to the second side or "face." This cue would be unnecessary on the new CD format or in the digital MP3 world. The initial release of the LP had a clear sticker that contained the "Silk Electric" logo, so that once removed the cover looked like the Warhol painting without any words.

That's the Way of the World is a 1975 album by Earth, Wind & Fire released on Columbia Records. It was also the soundtrack for a 1975 motion picture of the same name which featured several of the band members in cameo roles. Included on the album was the single "Shining Star", which was a #1 U.S. pop and R&B hit. Another popular single was the title track, which reached #12 on the pop chart. The album spent three weeks atop the Billboard Pop Albums Charts and has been certified triple platinum.[1][2] That's the Way of the World was also the third bestselling pop album and the number one bestselling R&B album of 1975 respectively.

In 2003, the album was ranked number 493 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

CRITICAL RECEPTION

The album received generally positive reviews from critics. Billboard Magazine described the album as "a very tightly produced and performed package" and added in their review that "EW&F has some of the finest musicians in any band and the compositions are all top-notch". Music critic Robert Christgau noted that on the album "this unit can do so many things it qualifies as the one-man band of black music even though it has nine members" and That's the Way of the World has also been described by Alex Henderson of Allmusic as "the band's best album" and "one of the strongest albums of the 1970s and EWF's crowning achievement".

That's the Way of the World was nominated in 1975 and 1976 for an American Music Award for Favorite Soul/R&B Album.

REVIEW BY ALEX HENDERSON

As phenomenally popular as Earth, Wind & Fire was from the mid-'70s to the early '80s, it's easy to forget that the band was hardly an overnight success. With Head to the Sky -- EWF's fourth album overall, second with Philip Bailey, and second for Columbia -- Maurice White's very spiritual and ambitious brand of soul and funk was starting to pay off commercially. The Latin-influenced "Evil" became the soulsters' biggest hit up to that point, and material ranging from the hauntingly pretty title song (which boasts one of Bailey's finest performances ever) to the jazz fusion gem "Zanzibar" is just as rewarding. The lineup White unveiled with Last Days and Time was working out beautifully; Bailey was clearly proving to be a major asset. Also worth noting is the presence of singer Jessica Cleaves, who left after this album and, several years later, resurfaced in George Clinton's eccentric female group the Brides of Funkenstein. EWF still had what was basically a cult following, but that was beginning to change with Head to the Sky. And when EWF took off commercially in 1974 and 1975, many new converts went back and saw for themselves just how excellent an album Head to the Sky was.

With 'Avatar', EWF abandoned its ill-fated late 1980s attempts to update its trademark sound, and returned to its classic horn-driven grooves from the '70s. The result is a solid follow up (or continuation!) to 1993's underrated 'Millenium'. This 13 track CD sounds contemporary and retro at the same time, featuring productions utilizing full horn sections stuck inside ballads ('Cruising'), and guest raps complementing the vocals on 'Revolution (Just Evolution)'. For the most part, Maurice White's production is VERY good, up to his 70's tricks of using link tracks and interludes to shift moods, and dropping in loud electric guitar when you least expect it (the heavy funk 'Rock It').

After EWF satisfied the Japanese fanbase with 'Avatar', they altered the original tracklisting, and included 'When Love Goes Wrong' on the American edition of 'Avatar' titled 'In The Name Of Love' (1997). 'When Love Goes Wrong' sounds like it was originally slated to be on Philip Bailey's solo CD (no group credits on the song!), but it found a home on this project because 3 solid tracks from 'Avatar' ('Change Your Mind', 'Take You To Heaven', and 'Bahia') weren't included

The music on both 'Avatar' & 'In The Name Of Love' is mostly catchy but never monumental like the band's best days. EWF displays their sense of fun but not their

This review is from: I-Robot - Italo Electro Disco (Audio CD)

Really good collection of underground electro music from the early 80's. Great opening five or six tracks that could still be played in most underground house techno clubs today! Couple of the tracks remind me of modern days artists like linus loves and tiga (I think he uses one of the bass lines ,from a track on this cd, in his own production). If you want something a bit different give this cd a try
